It is filled with mastoid air cells and it communicates with the middle ear. Sometimes, an infection in the middle ear can spread to the mastoid and cause inflammation, called mastoiditis.<\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"P68B1DB1-Normal2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Mastoiditis is the most common complication of untreated acute otitis media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #99cc00;\">Mastoiditis symptoms can include:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Acute middle ear infection: pain, redness, plugged-ear sensation, difficulty hearing, discharge in the auditory canal<\/li>\n<li>Ear bulging out from the head<\/li>\n<li>Swelling, a mass or redness behind the ear (most frequent manifestation)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"P68B1DB1-Normal4\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-CA\">If you have these symptoms, it is important to consult an ear, nose and throat specialist (ENT).<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"P68B1DB1-Normal2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><strong>Mastoiditis is treated with antibiotics<\/strong>.
