There are several medications which pose a risk to the hearing or balance system.<\/h4>\n<p>They are said to have \u201cototoxic potential\u201d, that is to say they can damage the structures of the ear by causing hearing loss, tinnitus and dizziness, temporarily or permanently.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #80a30f;\"><strong>What medications cause a risk of ototoxicity?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Hundreds of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications can pose a risk of ototoxicity. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #80a30f;\"><strong><u>Antibiotics:<\/u><\/strong><\/span> Amikacin, Gentamicin, Neomycin, Streptomycin, Tobramycin, Azithromycin, Clarithromycin, Erythromycin, Doxycycline, Minocycline, Tetracycline and Vancomycin.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #80a30f;\"><strong><u>Analgesics and anti-inflammatories<\/u>:<\/strong><\/span> salicylates (Aspirin), Ibuprofen, Naproxen, etc.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #80a30f;\"><strong><u>Antineoplastic drugs (chemotherapy or treatments for cancer):<\/u><\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Higher risk: Cisplatin and Carboplatin<\/li>\n<li>Others: Oxaplatin, Vinblastine, Vincristine, Doxorubicin, Cyclophosphamide, Methotrexate, Ifosfamide, Dactinomycin, Bleomycin, Vinorelbine and Etoposide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><u><span style=\"color: #80a30f;\"><strong>Others:<\/strong><\/span> certain diuretics (e.g.: Furosemide, etc.), certain antimalarials (e.g.: Chloroquine, Quinine, etc.), certain chelators (e.g.: Deferoxamine), etc<\/u>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #80a30f;\"><strong>What is the risk of developing ototoxicity when taking one of these medications?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Medications with ototoxic potential present<strong> a risk<\/strong> of hearing toxicity, but do not necessarily imply the appearance of this \u201cside effect\u201d.
