Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and symptoms in the ears

Otalgia, or ear pain, can be unpleasant and disruptive. Some of the many possible causes related to the ear are:

  • otitis (ear infection),
  • wax obstruction,
  • Eustachian tube dysfunction
  • and more.

Ear pain can also be caused by other nearby anatomical structures, such as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is the jaw joint. In fact, clenching or grinding your teeth creates tension in the jaw that can extend to the ear and consequently cause pain or discomfort.

Problems linked to the TMJ can also lead to other symptoms in the ears, such as:

  • tinnitus,
  • pressure
  • or blocked ear sensation.

It is important to consult an audiologist for any ear symptoms to determine what type of referral is needed (dentist, physiotherapist or other professional) for your TMJ so you can get the right treatment.

If you have any questions about your hearing or that of a loved one, our hearing health professionals will be happy to answer them.
